We are thrilled to share some wonderful news about the future of Old School Camps!

After a decade of producing over 30 magical music camps, founder and director Jenny Whiteley @jenny.whiteley has made the decision to hand the Camp Director reins over to the two of us; Jaymie Karn @jaymiekarn.creative and Kyle Kirkpatrick @dobrokyle . But did you know that you can also rent one of our Glamping Tents? If you rent a Glamper from us, it will be all set up for you when you arrive! We dress it up nice with a REAL BED! You get a mattress, clean warm bedding and pillows, a side table, a chair, and battery-powered lighting. Camp Director Jenny even lovingly arranges a little bouquet of wildflowers to really make you feel at home.

Bringing a companion? We've got Glamping Tents for two!

Coming to Old School, whether as a Camper, Alumni or Companion, means you get to eat the most impeccably prepared meals made by our own Joey Wright! You might know him as an incredible picker (which is very, very much true) but he's also a ridiculously talented chef.

Joey Wright is a Juno-nominated songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and performer from Toronto. Joey is well known for his lyrical and inspired guitar and mandolin playing. He is also highly regarded for his compositions and songwriting.

Joey was one of the leading lights in the explosive bluegrass, old time and traditional country scene in Toronto in the 90’s and 2000’s. Joey joined Jenny Whiteley’s band in 1999, and their first two albums (Jenny Whiteley & Hopetown) both won Juno awards for Best Roots Traditional Album. In 2005 Joey joined Sarah Harmer’s band to record the album I’m A Mountain which earned him a gold record. In 2007 Joey collaborated with Jesse Zubot, Steve Dawson, Dan Whiteley and Joe Phillips to create his own album, Jalopy. Jalopy received a Juno nomination for Best Instrumental Album. He has since recorded the acclaimed albums Hatch, Tuxedo! (with Christine Bougie), Country Music, and Satie on the Beach (with Luke Mercier) among others.

With an honours degree in music from Humber College, Joey has over 20 years teaching experience. In addition to private instruction, Joey has taught at music workshops all over Canada including ArtsWells in BC and the Old School Bluegrass Camp in Ontario.

While completing his classical piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music with Antonin Kubalek in Toronto, Luke began his apprenticeship in Violin restoration at Geo. Heinl & Co. Ltd., in 1991. As a violin restorer of nearly 22 years, he has come to treasure his experience of having handled, studied and restored many rare and important violins, violas and cellos. His most cherished restoration projects to date are of the 1689 ‘Baumgartner’ Antonio Stradivari, works by Francesco Stradivari, J. B. Guadagninni, J.B. Vuillaume, Amati, Guarnieri and Tononi and the list goes on… In January of 2006, Luke and his better-half Janet relocated their family to Hastings County where they set up a home based workshop / studio in Springbrook.

Meet Jason @jmercer67 , a Canadian born, multi-talented musician, mix engineer and producer who has spent over 30 years playing music live, recording in the studio and touring the world over with artists such as Ani Difranco, Ron Sexsmith, Rick Moranis, BareNaked Ladies, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, The Hot Sardines, Jesse Harris, Oh Pep, Abrams Brothers, Ana Egge, Annie Keating, Steven Page, Matt Keating, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, among others.

Jason is versatile in styles ranging from R&B and Rock to Country and Bluegrass, Jazz and Folk. As a multi-instrumentalist, he can switch from electric bass to double bass to banjo with ease.

Please welcome, new to the Old School family of instructors, Kentucky's own Don Rogers!

@flatbottomdon is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays a variety of styles of music. He grew up in Clark County Kentucky just outside of Winchester but has lived on his farm in a remote part of Bath County since 2004. He has taught at Kentucky’s premier school for traditional mountain music, Cowan Creek Mountain Music school, nearly every year since 2007; has given private lessons; taught at Augusta Heritage Center’s Old Time week; taught at the Louisville Folk School; and for several years, he was part of a small group of people who coordinated the Morehead Old Time Festival. Don has taught traditional fiddle, guitar and mandolin in both private lessons and at the week long traditional music camps, Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, Augusta Heritage Center, and through the Wise Village program in Stanton, KY. He has also taught song writing, all styles of guitar, fiddle and mandolin in group and private lessons.

@flatbottomdon is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays a variety of styles of music. He grew up in Clark County Kentucky just outside of Winchester but has lived on his farm in a remote part of Bath County since 2004. He has taught at Kentucky’s premier school for traditional mountain music, Cowan Creek Mountain Music school, nearly every year since 2007; has given private lessons; taught at Augusta Heritage Center’s Old Time week; taught at the Louisville Folk School; and for several years, he was part of a small group of people who coordinated the Morehead Old Time Festival. Don has taught traditional fiddle, guitar and mandolin in both private lessons and at the week long traditional music camps, Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, Augusta Heritage Center, and through the Wise Village program in Stanton, KY. He has also taught song writing, all styles of guitar, fiddle and mandolin in group and private lessons.

Chris began playing banjo in 1978. His dad, Murray Quinn, who has remained a lifelong supporter of Chris’ music, got him his first banjo for Christmas. Murray did his best to take Chris out to see live music and meet musicians. “Dad snuck me into a bar once when I was 12 so that I could see a live bluegrass band.”
At music camps and festivals, online and in person, Chris Quinn teaches music to many loyal students. Through his proven, time-tested methods, Chris has an amazing, successful track record for his banjo students! Some of Chris’ former students have forged professional music careers of their own.

During his career, Chris has performed with: The Foggy Hogtown Boys, Heartbreak Hill, Jughead, Rick Fielding, Chris Coole, Arnie Naiman, The Backstabbers, The Hamstrung Stringband, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, Madison Violet, Ron Hynes, The Barrel Boys, Tyler Beckett, Jonathon Byrd, Tony Allen, Lou Moore, The Good Brothers, Tony Furtado, Tammy Fassaert, John McEuen, Vassar Clements, Kenny Baker and Josh Graves Jr., and Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys.

This year, Rosalyn Dennett is lending her immense skill and knowledge to the fiddle class at Old School Bluegrass Camp! She has thankfully graced us before at our Fiddle and Banjo camp in 2023.

In addition to being the Executive Director of @folkmusicontario, Rosalyn Dennett is a fiddler, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has established herself on the international roots scene through her role as one of the founding members of the highly acclaimed quartet Oh My Darling. With four nominated albums, headlining four international tours, and sold-out shows across the country, she has also traveled extensively through Ireland, Appalachia and Louisiana to pursue her love of traditional music. Some of her projects include Ken Whiteley & the Beulah Band, Pigeonhawk Stringband & Old Pony (Old Time Appalachian/Bluegrass), Bon Fer (Cajun/Zydeco), and many more. Rosalyn has had the pleasure of performing with Donovan Woods, Fred Penner, David Francey, The Fugitives, Zachary Lucky, Kaia Kater, the Crooked Brothers, Gabriel De Santis, Hannah Shira Naiman, Shawna Caspi, Sarah Jane Scouten any many more great artists and has recorded on over 20 albums as a freelance musician.

Meet Jason, a Canadian born, multi-talented musician, mix engineer and producer who has spent over 30 years playing music live, recording in the studio and touring the world over with artists such as Ani Difranco, Ron Sexsmith, Rick Moranis, BareNaked Ladies, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, The Hot Sardines, Jesse Harris, Oh Pep, Abrams Brothers, Ana Egge, Annie Keating, Steven Page, Matt Keating, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, among others.

Jason is versatile in styles ranging from R&B and Rock to Country and Bluegrass, Jazz and Folk. As a multi-instrumentalist, he can switch from electric bass to double bass to banjo with ease.

Jason studied Bass privately with John Gowan (Toronto Symphony), George Koller, Tony Scherr (Bill Frizell), Orin O’brien (NY Philharmonic), jazz greats: Michael Moore, Gerrald Cannon (Cecil Taylor) and Banjo with Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, Ryan Cavanaugh, and Chris Quinn.
